Will Connected TVs be the hit product for the Christmas?

This is just short note on the Christmas sales as I've been getting more than one "what do you recommend for a new TV?" -questions from my friends. As if I would be an expert.

However, after reading this article about the retailers’ failure to push SmartTV’s to consumers in UK, I decided to contribute my opinion.

So, what I've done is browse all catalogues called my R&D and sales contacts at various manufacturers and tested our own apps on as many TV's as possible (while watching a few HD movies of course).

And the outcome:

  • There is a lot of moderately priced (<1000EUR) Connected TVs with fantastic video quality.
  • The App portals work more or less the same, although there is big difference in the content offering.
  • The look-and-feel of the TVs is the same, although the more you pay the flatter TV you get

So, what I've done is to recommend Samsung 6 Series because it is reasonably priced, looks the best, and the app portal is actively developed.

It remains to be seen if my recommendation has been followed or not, but at least I hope that people have given thought also to other factors than screen size and quality when choosing their TVs.

And myself, I have a 6 year old Plasma TV and will update it once I am sure to get the HbbTV support (Yes, I do think it has a future here in Finland) to it.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!
